Pope Pius XI on the Knights of Columbus

We share an excellent quote from an encyclical published by Pope Pius XI on the persecution of the Church in Mexico in 1926 as mentioned in an Cristeros Martyrs article in the May edition of Columbia magazine (p. 14). His Holiness lauds the Knights for their efforts to support Mexican Catholics in resisting the masonic-communist regime in Mexico.

"First of all We mention the Knights of Columbus, an organization which is found in all the states of the Republic and which fortunately is made up of active and industrious members who, because of their practical lives and open profession of the Faith, as well as by their zeal in assisting the Church, have brought great honor upon themselves.  

This organization promotes two types of activities which are needed now more than ever. In the first place, the National Sodality of Fathers of Families, the program of which is to give a Catholic education to their own children, to protect the rights of Christian parents with regard to education, and in cases where children attend the public schools to provide for them a sound and complete training in their religion. 

Secondly, the Federation for the Defense of Religious Liberty, which was recently organized when it became clear as the noonday sun that the Church was menaced by a veritable ocean of troubles. 

This Federation soon spread to all parts of the Republic. Its members attempted, working in harmony and with assiduity, to organize and instruct Catholics so that they would be able to present a united invincible front to the enemy."

Blessed by the Blood of Martyrs

The May 2021 edition of Columbia Magazine published an excellent article on a new shrine to the Cristeros Martyrs in Mexico who died for the faith in the 1920s. 

Although the shrine's architecture is tragically modernist, and a stark departure from the classical church architecture Mexico was known for, the promotion of the cult of these martyrs (and brother Knights) can only help increase the traditional faith in Mexico (and the Knights).  God willing perhaps someday a traditional chapel can be built on site.

We also note that Guadalajara is one of the main cities for the Traditional Latin Mass as it is home to a Fraternity of St. Peter Latin Mass parish, and a school of formation, St. Junipero Serra Institute for Spanish speaking Latin Mass seminarians.

Report: Blessed Karl Mass, Luncheon & Conference 2021

On Good Shepherd Sunday, 18 April 2021, the Knights of Columbus Woodlawn Council 2161 Traditional Latin Mass Guild hosted a Mass in honor of Blessed Emperor Karl of Austria at St. Titus Church in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.

Fr. Boniface Hicks, OSB, Delegate to the Emperor Karl League of Prayers, offered a Solemn High Mass.  He preached on Emperor Karl as a type of the Good Shepherd.  Brother Cassian Edwards, OSB, served as Deacon, and Fr. Joachim Morgan, OSB, Parochial Vicar of St. Titus Parish, served as Sub-Deacon.

After Mass, the faithful gathered in the church hall for lunch, and a conference by Fr. Boniface on the life of Blessed Karl.

Sacred Liturgy Conference - June 1-4, Spokane, Washington

The 2021 Sacred Liturgy Conference will occur in Spokane, Washington from June 1-4. 

In person attendance will occur but will be limited.  A “virtual” option will be offered at a discounted rate.   

The conference, Incarnation in the Eucharist, will feature many expert speakers, including lay and clergy.  

 The keynote speaker, Archbishop Thomas Gullickson, former apostolic nuncio to Switzerland, will offer a Pontifical Mass of Corpus Christi, followed by a Eucharistic Procession.

We share a statement from our new Supreme Knight, Patrick Kelly on Blessed Michal McGivney given on Monday March 29, the 139th anniversary of founding of the Knights of Columbus. 

 Additionally, we wish all Knights, and their families a blessed Holy Week and Happy Easter.

Our Founder’s Mission

March 29, 2021

 

Brother Knights:

Today, we celebrate Founder’s Day, which marks the date on which the Knights of Columbus was granted its charter by the State of Connecticut in 1882 and which honors, in a particular way, our visionary Founder.

This Founder’s Day is the first since Father McGivney’s beatification, and it provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the importance of that momentous event and its meaning for our Order today.

Blessed Michael McGivney was inspired to create a band of Catholic gentlemen, devoted to the principles of charity and unity — helping those in need; growing in faith and virtue as Catholic husbands and fathers; and providing financial security to families.

I believe that the beatification of Father McGivney was a testament and affirmation of his spiritual vision. And we should each feel encouraged in realizing that vision to this day. For even if the challenges facing Catholic men have changed, the mission set forth by our Founder remains as relevant as ever.

Brother Knights, as many of our communities hope that better days are now before us, we should examine when and how we can return to normal council activities, with all due prudence and in accord with what is possible in our jurisdictions. We should also be inspired by those brave men who weathered a great deal of hardship — including a pandemic — in the first years of the Order, so that the world and our Church might be made better by faithful men standing together. Those early Knights were not rash in their actions, but they were courageous in laying down their lives by serving others, and building up their families, parishes and communities. Together, let us continue to reach out to our neighbors in need and to build up our own families, parishes and communities. In so doing, we will honor our holy Founder and ultimately give glory to God.

Report: Solemn Pontifical Mass for Annunciation 2021

On Thursday, 25 March 2021, the Most Reverend William J. Waltersheid, Auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh, offered a Traditional Latin Solemn Pontifical Mass for the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Titus Church in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.

Since the Annunciation fell on Thursday in Passion Week this year, the crucifix and statues were veiled.

Fr. Jean-Luc Zadroga, OSB, Administrator Pro Tem of St. Titus Parish, served as Assistant Priest, Brother Cassian Edwards, OSB, served as Deacon, and Fr. Joachim Morgan, OSB, Parochial Vicar of St. Titus Parish, served as Sub-Deacon.

James Kuniega served as Master of Ceremonies #1, and Camden Sarver served as Master of Ceremonies #2.

The Mass was offered in reparation for sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Fr. Cyprian Constantine, OSB, was the organist, while Devren Yener directed the schola.

This was the first Traditional Latin Solemn Pontifical Mass offered at St. Titus Church in over 57 years, and Bishop Waltersheid's first in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
